Bert van Dijk, Shanghai correspondent for Dutch paper Het Financieele Dagblad, tells us about what he saw at the Iran pavilion: “Iran wants to impress visitors with the supposedly high technologies that the country has developed. There is a model of a cloned goat to see, the first self-built satellite, a microscope, drugs against AIDS, a laser harp, and other complex machines. On the first floor, you’ll see how the Iranians are really going for it. They have built a carpet shop, where visitors can buy authentic Iranian rugs — no, not for a few bucks but for a small fortune — as even a small carpet can cost you 50,000 euros. I even saw a 3 x 4 metre rug going at a cost of 1.2 million yuan, or 120,000 euros. I’m not in the carpet business, but this seems to me to be a little on the high side. Apparently, Iran hopes to recover the cost of its pavilion like Belgium which is trying to sell diamonds at its pavilion.”

On May 9, Shanghai’s Russian community gathered in the St Nicholas Church on 16 Gaolan Road, for a special Victory Day service. Built in 1934, the Orthodox church was once used as a washing machine factory and later hosted a French restaurant, Ashanti Dome, on the upper floor, and a Spanish tapas bar on the ground floor called Boca. During the Cultural Revolution which sought to destroy the ‘four olds’ (old customs, old habits, old culture and old thinking), public worship was prohibited but quick-thinking believers of various religions posted images of Mao over their places of worship to prevent overzealous Red Guards from bursting in to destroy the buildings. The St Nicholas Church was one of such buildings — and the image of Mao kept watch over the building until it was taken down in the early 2000s. According to zinka who shared these pictures with us, the Russian community rented the church for this special event (note the worshippers standing under the disco ball), and it still remains unclear if and when the building will be converted back into a church.

Guys, you’ve made it! China’s Net Nanny considers your website such a threat to the People’s Republic that she has decided to ban it! That’s right! Dropbox.com is no longer accessible and file-syncing and sharing is no longer possible here in China. Not without a VPN anyway.

Note to Chinese entrepreneurs: Start building your Dropbox clones now!

China is set to implement a ban on smoking in all indoor public places including workplaces and public transport vehicles from January 2011.

Yang Qing, Director General of the Department of Maternal and Child Health and Community Health at China’s Ministry of Health (MOH) says that the ban is being carried out according to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

The MOH will ban smoking in its offices this month.

One year ago, the ministry said that all its offices and medical facilities would be smoke-free by 2011.

[from the official Shanghai Expo website]

It’s been a roller coaster ride for the Shanghai Expo in terms of attendance so far. While the state media has been dutifully trumpeting the amazing ticket sales (apparently 33 million tickets have been sold, that’s almost half the target of 70 million!), all that hasn’t quite translated into real attendance yet. As you can see in the graph above which we found on the Shanghai Expo website, attendance has been mostly below 200,000, and on May 5, less than 100,000 visitors entered the Expo grounds.

Just how many visitors does the Expo need on site daily to hit its 70 million target? Global Times has done all the math for us — 380,000, or almost twice as many as we saw on opening day.

And how much money will the government stand to lose if the people don’t come? Over at the China Economic Review, Malcolm Moore extrapolates current attendance figures and based on an estimated two thirds paying customers, comes up with a potential 4 billion yuan shortfall — a figure we have to respectfully disagree with because he doesn’t take into account ticket buyers who eventually don’t show up.

There’s no doubt that Expo organisers will be able to sell 70 million tickets, or more if they so wished. Word on the street is that state-owned enterprises may be “encouraged” to pick up the slack — but getting all those ticket holders to show up? That will require more than just a bit of magic.

Wan Yanhai (万延海), founder of the Beijing-based Aizhixing Institute and one of the most outspoken HIV/AIDS activists in China has arrived in Philadelphia with his wife and daughter after hiding out in Hong Kong and Guangzhou for two weeks.

In an interview with the AP, Wan said he decided to leave because of increasing intimidation by authorities, “As an organization and personally, the attacks from the government had become very serious. I had concerns about my personal safety and was under a lot of stress… When I am in China, the authorities look at me like I am a bird in a cage. They say: ‘If you don’t listen to me, then I will eat you, but after I leave the country, they will see me in a new light, because I am no longer in their cage.”

In 2002, Wan Yanhai, was detained for “leaking state secrets” by exposing the botched blood collection schemes in Henan. In January this year, his organisation Aizhixing was forced to cancel its 16th anniversary celebrations. Two months later, his speech at the Southern China Science and Industry University on sexual orientation and mental health was interrupted by Guangzhou police, acting on a notice that had been sent to universities across China to prevent them from inviting him to speak.

Another notable Chinese HIV/AIDS activist now in the United States is the award-winning 82 year old “grandma” activist Dr Gao Yaojie (高耀潔). She fled to the US late last year after many years of imprisonment and harrassment.
