Corruption Profiling: Should Adulterers Be Given the Same Scrutiny as Naked Officials?
I wrote yesterday about the increased attention on “naked” officials, government employees whose spouse and children live abroad. Lots of ‘em have been caught in corruption probes so officials that fit the profile probably deserve more scrutiny.
If that’s a good idea, who else is worthy of a closer look by investigators?
A local official from East China’s Anhui province has been reported for corruption by his ex-wife and son out of revenge because he had an extramarital affair, a local newspaper reported yesterday.
They were attempting to safeguard three safes filled with evidence alleging corruption. Liu Jianghui is the director of Dangshan county’s bureau of housing management.
“We used to be poor. I felt I was being cheated when my husband wanted to get rid of me when our economic situation was getting better,” Zhang was quoted by Xin’an Evening Newspaper yesterday. (China Daily)
Now, I’m not saying that everyone who has ever cheated of his/her spouse is likely to be corrupt. If we had that level of corruption, the government and economy would be completely non-functional.
However, let me just ask this question: when you hear about an official charged with corruption, how often do the details include the fact that he was screwing around on the side, often using State funds to do so?
Remember, whoring around requires funds. Most government officials are paid very little. Therefore, those officials who have girlfriends or routinely use the services of what we’ll refer to as “ladies of the evening,” (this is a family blog) are getting that money from an outside source.
See? Now corruption seems a lot more likely, doesn’t it?
