Yesterday morning, we received a surprise invitation to the Expo’s Pudong site, and jumped at the chance for a sneak peek of the national and group pavilions less than a month before the event’s May opening. We spent six hours walking through Zones A, B and C, marveling at the amazingly innovative designs of certain pavilions, and being surprised by the drabness of others.
Despite previous news that the completion of one fifth of the pavilions would likely be delayed due to underfunding, it still came as a surprise that, 26 days before its scheduled public debut, the Expo site continues to be such a hotbed of frenetic and furious construction.
“Can everything be finished by May 1?” I asked the very folks building the Expo – workers taking a break underneath the elevated walkway. “Maybe…” was one man’s reply, before turning his back on me to finish lunch with his compatriots.
Anyway, we invite you to judge for yourselves. The above photos are of the pavilions and grounds located in Zone A, home to the imposing China Pavilion. Photos of Zones B and C will be in separate posts, so stay tuned.
