The baronial Writer’s Bar at Raffles Hotel, all marble columns, satin drapes and bone china, would, one supposes, elicit curt approval from the late Duchess of Bedford. For it was she, 180 years ago (at about 5 o’clock), who first instructed her servants to prepare tea and cake to fend off “that sinking feeling” between luncheon and dinner.
